Infertility?

When should a person in their late twenties be concerned about fertility? My BF have been discussing children for the past 6 months or so but he quote unquote " Doesn't think his little soldiers are swimming "

We agreed to stop using birth control about three months ago, but we aren't actively trying. I know that this is a relatively short period of time, but I can be impatient for answers. Especially when he comes up with a statement like that.

If you try for more than 6 months and nothing happens you should both be checked..

Why would he think the soldiers aren't swimming??

The average healthy couple takes on average 6 months to 1 year to conceive, so you are well within those guidelines. You are at peak fertility in your early 20's, and fertility does begin to decline slightly in your late 20's and even more so in your early 30's,and more dramatically into later 30's, but at your age you still have a very good chance of getting pregnant without any assistance. I am 33, 6 months pregnant, and got pregnant on my 2nd cycle trying with my husband, who is 33. My sister, who is 35, tried for 10 months before getting pregnant. Her hubby is 35 also. Each couple is individual.

If you have stopped all birth control and are having unprotected sex, you are actively trying. Any reason why you say you aren't?

And lastly, why does your boyfriend think there's something wrong with his sperm? Has he ever had any testing done? Has a doctor given him any indication this is likely?

Unless you are not having sex, why would you say you're not 'actively trying'? You could ask your bf why he thinks so and if there are known fertility problems in his closer family.

On the other hand your bf could also say this to just not 'hope' too much in the beginning, or because he's afraid, or... idk.

I believe it's only about 20%-30% that conceives in the first three months. Also: a lot can depend on what kind of BC you were using. Some women take some time after the pill or hormonal BC to have a regular cycle.

Okay, when I say not actively trying what I meant was, we aren't monitoring my ovulation or specifically going out of our way to have sex on days when I might be ovulating. Not buying any of those home ovulation kits to check when my cycle is. Stuff like that. We are ready to conceive but not rushing it or forcing it kinda thing.

Honestly regarding the "soldiers swimming" thing. I think he's being paranoid. We've had a few conversations and I'm not entirely sure he realizes that fertility issues can be with the woman as well. But people in his family get pregnant if you look at them funny so I don't think he realized that there may be work involved.

Hope that clears things up.

There are home testing kits you can buy on the internet. To test mens fertility. I bought my partner one, as he always wondered if he was infertile. Then 4 pregnancies later... It's still sitting unused on the shelf. =D

We weren't trying nor preventing for almost 3 years before I became pregnant.

If I were you then I'd actively try for another 3-6 cycles before I'd start to worry. I don't think fertility DRs will even allow you to make an appointment unless you've been actively trying for a year.

Unless you are under age 35 or with known fertility problems and then they recommend you be evaluated after trying for 6 months.
