Unhappy Depressed...

Hey guys,

So it's been a week since I've started to try to lose weight. My plan so far is to eat only healthy things, and I try not to be in "starvation mode" so I eat about every 2-3 hours. I drink a bit more than 2 liters of water a day, and in the morning I have a glass of lemon water, and at night I have a cup of green tea. I started working out 4 times a week for 1.5 hours each day.

However, to get to the point...I think I'm possibly getting crazy obsessed...I stand and look at myself in the mirror for like 10 min almost twice a day. It just makes me depressed because I can't see any difference in my weight, and I feel like I'm trying hard, and it just feels like my effort isn't paying off. I want so bad to lose weight. I've never felt as ugly as I do now. It makes me very depressed, and I'm constantly researching about weight loss and staring at myself, but when i realize I'm still the same fat ugly girl I just get so down and it's all I ever think about. I'm trying to shake this feeling and get back into my positive feeling that I was in last week, but I can't erase these feelings. I feel like no matter how hard I try, it will never happen for me and I will be huge for my whole life. I don't want to give up trying, but it would make the journey somewhat more motivating if I knew my effort is going to pay off, and I'm not just wasting my time...I hate being depressed like this

I'm sorry you're having such a hard time with this, but you should be proud of yourself for taking this step.

I don't know your current weight, and I will respect that privacy, but I am going to judge by your post that you are wanting to lose more than just maybe ten pounds. You're trying to make a life change and that's not easy. When trying to lose a significant amount of weight, you are NOT going to see results instantaneously. It's going to take more than a week to SEE results. Naturally, since you're trying to lose weight you are going to hone in on your imperfections a little more, so what you see isn't going to be true to what you actually look like. This is why it's getting to you more now than ever before. Another thing that could be altering your mood is the diet change. Your body is going through withdrawals from foods it's used to, and that it craves, and you're not giving them to it so it's going to turn against you for a little while. However, get through the withdrawals and you're going to be feeling a thousand times better. I promise. Just keep eating those yummy veggies, fruits, fish, and white meats and your body is going to love you for it in the end. And make sure you do cardio, even if it's just a walk. Losing weight can only happen with exercising; keeping it off is where the good diet comes in. That's why combining both is so important. You're doing great so far!! Keep it up!

Just keep in mind is that you will start to lose weight, just not right away. So if you are getting to point where you're looking in the mirror too long, MAKE yourself do something else. If that means going for a walk or washing your hair or reorganizing your closet, then do it! Only weight yourself at the end of each week, not everyday. Stay strong, don't lose sight of your goal and I guarantee you will see the beautiful person that I am sure plenty of people already see in no time.

Best of luck to you! And we are always here for you!

If ur doing what u say your doing, its gonna happen, but u have to be patient. its only been a week?

it took me 2 months to lose 30 lbs and then i finally noticed a difference and now everyone wont stop mentioning it.

the biggest problem i believe with people who try and diet/exercise is that they give up when they dont get immediate results.

when u start school at the age of 5, u dont instantly start knowing everything, it takes years..

when u start dieting ur not going to lose it all in the first week or 2, its gonna take a month or more..

thanks for your replies, I guess I'm just being paranoid and I have to stick with this no matter what.
Hopefully this depression goes away once my body gets more used to my new diet.
Thanks again!

You'll rarely see a significant weight change in the first week of any new weight loss regime, but from week two it will start to happen, I promise you. Just make sure you do the fundamentally calorie calculations, because I know people who eat only "healthy" things, but they eat so many of them, and the things branded as healthy aren't always that healthy, that actually their calorie intake is still matching their daily usage and so they're not losing much weight.

Thanks karvala, I have been really strict about my diet, I know that there is no way I am eating as bad and as many calories as I was before. Well today I feel so much better, I feel like being patient will just reward me and I really do believe now that all I have to do is wait for the results to happen and I can't rush it. So many have told me that it takes a while in the beginning to actually start losing weight, so I'm not torn or depressed much anymore .

Btw. is it normal to feel really tired when you go on a diet and cut out junk food and sugary things ? I started my diet last week, and at first I wasn't very tired, but this week I noticed I feel more tired than usual. Is this expected ?
