doctor or dentist?

If someone had an unbearable pain on a specific area of their gums, would they see a dentist or a doctor?

I'm assuming this is some kind of infection. Can dentists prescribe antibiotics?

Thanks!

You probably can give the dental office a call and see what they say.

Periodontist - it's a dentist that specializes in gums. Or just a regular DDS dentist if that's what your insurance pays for

Yes, dentists can prescribe antibiotics

Yes that is where you go and yes they can. They are an actual dr and have a medical liscence. They are called doctors of dentistry.

It could be an abcess which can lead to the loss of a tooth, so go right away.

Yes, definitely go to the dentist.

Most MDs don't deal with teeth/gums, and leave it to the dentist DDS, because they know much more about the mouth area.

Ouch, sorry you are going through that.

Hugs, Rose

dentists specialise in full mouth care, including gums. its a common mis-conception dentists only look after teeth themselves. hell no gums - no teeth right?
