I'm really worried about my short term memory.

I haven't had much sleep the last two days and I have drank a lot of coffee today but someone said something to me about 5 minutes ago and I cannot remember what it was.

My short term memory is turning to junk. Usually it improves when I stop drinking coffee but right now it is just awful. Any thoughts ? Can I improve my short term memory and is tiredness know to have an impact ?

i think your first sentence pretty much tells you why your short term memory is not working at the moment...too much caffeine and not enough sleep will definitely hinder your memory.

No not really it is an ongoing problem as I have stated before and in other threads. Today has just been really bad and it is worrying me a lot. Do I have a disease ? is my brain deteriorating or is it just normal when you don't pay attention ?

I am fairly forgetful myself, my friends get frustrated because i tell the same stories over and over again...
I don't know what the answer is...you can research foods/vitamins etc that help to improve memory...

Sounds like the onset of Alzheimers to me...oh dear, a sign of growing old...haha

Buy a Nintendo DX and some Brain games....designed to improve your memory.

I never forget...I have a great memory and despite being an 'oldie'....at 32.

To answer your questions literally, and not bore you at length on the topic of sleep and memory which is an area of mine: yes you can improve your short-term memory through exercises, yes lack of sleep can interfere with memory in many ways, though more longer term (days+, not minutes), yes tiredness can reduce your short-term memory facility, yes lack of attention can obviously lead to a failure to remember something. I should also add that you are at an age where you may first start to notice a decrease in memory ability, which is quite normal. It must be pointed out, though, that one event is not much of a sample to base anything on.

Of course you're not going to remember something someone said if you weren't even paying attention to them in the first place.

Regular exercise, no smoking, adequate sleep, managing stress and eating food with B, C and E vitamins and omega 3 fatty acids will all help towards memory retention. You can also exercise your brain with memory exercises.

I can sympathize with you there. Ever since having my son my brain has turned to mush and I forget everything. The latest thing I have noticed is that I forget how to spell things

Just wait ...... it gets real bad about 50+, there's a saying the memory is the second thing to go and I can't remember what the first thing is.

More sleep, universal help for memory, try to pay close attention when your are talking to someone. When you have forgotten what someone said, just replay that time sequence over again in your brain, eventually it comes back, but in my case it is usually 2 days later and no longer is pertinent.

My mom tells me wait till I get to her age and see how it feels. She is 61. About 50 times a day I forget what I was going to say, and by the time I remember it does not matter anymore...LOL
