Perimenopause

It's just been confirmed today by my doctor that I'm in the perimenopausal stage. The news hit me like a ton of brick because I had planned on becoming a mother for the first time in the next couple of years or so. Right now, I'm still somewhat fertile, but I'm not at a stage in my life where it's financially feasible for me to bring a child into this world. Not to mention, I don't even have a steady man/husband in my life.

BTW, I'm only 38. It's rare to go through menopause at my age, but it does happen.

How did your doctor figure out you are perimenopausal? Have your periods changed? I asked my doctor if I was perimenopausal and she said no. Some people go through menopause earlier than others. A friend of mine stopped at 47. Some people stop in their 50's.

Can't you still get pregnant during perimenopause? I thought you could even in menopause?

perimenopause lasts as long as ten years. I know that firsthand. And yes, you can still get pregnant until you haven't had a period for 12 months. That's what my obgyn told me. I looked it up on the web and it said pretty much the same thing. So, don't panic!

I got pregnant at 40 so it is entirely possible, as long as you are still ovulating. I am almost 42 and as far as I know I am still fine. Perimenopause is a stage that comes before menopause. For me my periods are still very regular. My mom was 47 when she went into menopause.

The signs were all there except I chose to ignore them. The warm flushing overwhelming my body, there are more nights I stay awake than I actually sleep, the mood swings, and of course, the obvious, my lack of menses for the past six months. I still spot here or there but not what you would consider a real menstrual cycle. I thought these were just symptoms of stress, from school, life, and family. And just last week, I had a terrible bout with hot flashes. It finally dawned on me that maybe I'm nearing the end of my fertility.

Awww I am sorry, but the lack of a period may signal more than perimenopause. I am sorry, maybe you can adopt when you are ready for children?

I am very sorry to hear that. You might still be able to get pregnant over the next couple of years, you never know.

Thank you everyone. By the time I am ready and if I can't naturally conceive then adoption is an alternative.
