Psychologists or Psychiatrists?
As some of you know, somethings happened on sunday that really got to me. Im taking it really hard, I'm depressed even more now than before im filled with self doubt and low self esteem. But i want to do something about it. My college offers free psychologists or psychiatrists or whatever they are. I was thinking after i got out of class tomorrow, i should talk to them about my problems. I mean it couldn't hurt right? I just want to let it all out because it building inside me. Right now, I'm willing to try anything to get over this i call "malaise". Has anyone else tried them and have they worked?

I'm going to school to become a psychologist now. Yes it helps. It's good to have someone to talk to about stuff. Please take advantage of the free help.

i never used them personally but a lot of my clients go and it seems to help all of those that are actually looking for assistance/help/change.
btw the two are different. they will both counsel you (psychologist more so) but only the psychiatrist can prescribe medications.

You have nothing to lose by seeing a psychologist or psychiatrist.

I've had sessions with both and tend to feel better spending time with a psychiatrist, not because of the drugs, but because they have more advanced training.

I would visit the psychiatrist only because they are more experienced and can probably offer you more.

Psychiatrists are medical doctors, they don't have more experience than psychologist, it's a different approach. They can prescribe medicine. Psychologist vary greatly on their approach. Ask your therapist where and with who they have studied. Look into their school of thought. Is it behavior modification or a whole life Jungian approach, etc ..?

In my personal experience, the title is a mere semantic difference. I've seen counselors, therapists, psychologists of nearly every description, and they all basically offer the same thing.
I've yet to see a psychiatrist (long story), but I'll bet my teeth that he/she would be able to offer no more constructive help than the aforementioned people. In other words, it doesn't really matter what their title is. |
