vitamin B questions???

Okay so this girl at work is convinced that vitamin B gives you energy, and I told her that she is wrong that vitamin B only helps you synthisize it. She says that there is no difference and that I am just splitting hairs and vitamin B give you energy.

The way it was explained to me is that there are 3 energy sources for the body sugar, fat, and protein. Now if at the end of a long day you need a pick me up so you decide to take a bunch of vitamin B and you haven't had hardly any sugar, fat or protein, then your body will do just about nothing because it as nothing to work with. further more, vitamin B isn't coffee where the more you drink the more wired you get. Your body will only produce what it needs and not work overtime just because it has extra vitamin B.

If I am wrong and I have misinterpreted what the vitamin books have said please correct me, but I hope I'm not.

You were right, it assists, it doesn't actually give you energy. Its a big part of the bodies processing of energy sources and using that energy in the cells.

Hey there! I agree with both of you, it just assists. I take the B stress vitamin every day, for the folic acid (which you should take if you have any chance of becoming pregnant, even if unplanned, to decrease the risk of spina bifida) and I've had much more energy than usual.

I totally think a balanced diet is better than a pill. You get a natural and usually more ready to use form of vitamins and minerals. I take B (when I remember), it's water soluble so its not going to hurt to take more than you need, then your body will definitely have all it needs.

Nope, water soluble, goes out with the urine. To actually overdose would require a megadose of it, like taking a hundred or so vitamin pills. B6 is actually a kidney stone preventer, B8 is good for preventing gallstones.

She's right. Vitamin B can give you energy. It does so indirectly but so what? Sounds like you were being a bit of a knowitall.
