I saw the ex and nearly jumped out of my skin

Is this a normal reaction?

I bumped RIGHT into her in Boots and felt my eyes widen right up, like I'd seen a ghost. I think I turned white and I felt faint for a few seconds. It was a strong reaction. I was just so shocked to see her after a few months and be staring right in her face. What does my reaction mean and what is she gonna think to it? Does it look like I was really weak? When I came out the shop after pretending to look for summut at the back she was over the way talking with a bloke, I guess that's her new fella (sigh). Anway I carry on my business around the shopping centre and then I end up walking towards her and this bloke again. I saw her quite a way away and didn't want to walk past them so I turned around and walked the other way. Does this look weird too? I just didn't wanna see them both. Do I look really bothered to them do you think?

I'm just shocked still and confused it was so weird to see her. I feel a sad but I'm shocked how shocked I was when I saw her, it's like I forgot she existed (or was trying to).

I know exactly how you felt. it happened to me with one of my ex's. it feels like your body just stops. like an emptiness grows from your chest and takes over. then you forget how to breath. I was so amazed with my reaction, wich i had never felt before. but now i think it was kinda cool; it is so crazy how we are not in control of our bodies.

What you did was normal. She probably saw the look but I don't think that it will affect much since she is an ex...it doesn't matter what she thinks anyhow...

Dan,

You behaved fine. Most of us - I think - would act the same way.

Don't worry how you appeared. I'm sure to everyone else you looked composed.

Thanks I just feel so weird and strange about it all it was so weird bumping right into her after not seeing her for over 2 months, yet before that being really close. I always imagined I'd try and look all cool when I did bump into her, instead it was like I saw a ghost. I guess I did.

You may not have realized it, but she may have had the same look of surprise and shock.

Good point.

Nothing that you can do about it now, but it doesn't sound bad at all. It happens, especially when you haven't seen/spoken with each other for a while.

Yea that's true. I think it was easier for her because she was with her bf and I was alone. I knew I'd bump into her one day and I think I will again. I just hope I can be more composed next time. And I hope she's not with her bf and tries rubbing it in, it's the sort of thing she'd do. At least she was like that when we first split, unless she's changed or feels like bitter now.

Thinking about it, I guess its quite funny, I felt like I saw a ghost on Oct31st hehe

Just tell yourself she was wishing her new boyfriend was as good looking as you. It may sound a bit conceited but that thought allowed me to walk away from a similar situation with a smile on my face.

Funny how this works... I'm so fearful of this happening to me since I live in the same relatively small town as my ex, and his new fiance. I did bump into his brother-in-law shopping one day, and that was weird enough! I actually felt all sick and nervous just seeing a non-blood relative of his... odd eh?

But... I think it is a natural reaction. It just means that something in you still cares... either anger, sadness, hurt, remorse or otherwise. I don't think that goes away for some time. I suppose there is nothing to do but shake it off and keep working on moving on with life.
