seafood allergy

Does anyone know what is in certain seafoods that can make a person ill? My bf has always said that fish makes him sick, so he's never eaten any fish I've cooked, and can't even be in the room when I open a can of tuna. I always thought he was exaggerating, because he could still eat things like shrimp and scallops and have no problems. But, tonight I made us a shrimp/scallop stir-fry and 4 or so hours later, he was puking his guts out, and I was perfectly fine. So, I know it's not my cooking! I still feel bad though... even after running to the store with no makeup on, in my sweats, to get him ginger ale. Poor boy. So, is there is certain agent or something in ALL seafood that would cause the body to basically reject it?

I think it's mostly shellfish that makes people sick.

I'm allergic to "seafood" myself, but it's just catfish, and all fish with any kind of shell.

I get rashes all over my body and asthma but I don't throw up... so because fish tastes so good I eat them anyway, and just ride through the consequences. (Yum... king cram... yum...)

When I got my allergy shots there were no shots available for shell fish, I don't know if that has changed.

My brother's friend is also allergic to seafood... not sure what it is exactly, but I'd just give him the benefit of the doubt.
Fish and seafood aren't the same thing though... so maybe you'd want him to clarify.

I know for sure now that seafood makes him sick, but he used to be able to eat crustaceans and shellfish just fine. Now even that is no good. I would be so sad if I couldn't have seafood!

No one said you can't have seafood and he'll just stay off it.

My mom still cooked catfish and shellfish once in a while, but those that are allergic use their own judgements (which is the majority of the family.) We can eat it and ride out the consequences (for my brother it's throwing up, my dad it's asthma, me it's asthma and rashes), or we can avoid it.

I didn't mean I wouldn't eat it lol. I'm an island girl. I NEED seafood I do try to refrain from making it when he's around though. Our apartment is so tiny if I cook up a salmon, it smells sort of fishy for quite awhile, and makes him unhappy. I think it's just best if he avoids it altogether now. It's not really a huge loss for him, as he grew up on the prairies and doesn't have the same affinity for it. His Mom was teasing me, saying I was trying to poison him to get rid of him lol. Nice Mom huh?
