shin splints
i took about a week and a half off from running and went out yesterday for the first time. today my shins are pretty sore so i'm assuming that the cause is shin splints. i want to start my routine back up tomorrow. will one day of rest be enough? how can you prevent shin splints?

you can't really prevent shin splints completely, neither can you get rid of them magically. i have awful shin splints, did nothing about them midwinter on, ran until i literally collapsed at practice, got an mri done and i had 4 stress fractures in my right shin and 2 in my left. my suggestion is to go out immediately and get new shoes. really nice ones with great padding and shock absorbency so it minimizes the impact when you hit the surface. look into asics or brooks, and search for something that fits your characteristics. aslo, stretches help as well. and i have no idea what condition your feet or in, but do you wear orthodics? if not maybe you should look into them because they've helped me tons.
also, before and after i run i dot an ice cube masage on my shins, varying with intensity. i know it sounds dumb but it feels greattt : )

As <3 said just ice your shins as much as possible, ice cups work best for this.

yeah ill definitely try icing them down if it persists. i just recently got new shoes. they're new balance 8507 or "Zips" and from what ive read about them they are great shock absorbers. thanks for the responses.

I used to have really bad shin splints constantly. I would rest, use ice, take anti-inflammatories, but nothing would make them go away.
Finally, I went out and got new shoes. Not a week later, I hurt myself in such a way that kept me from doing more than hobbling for a few weeks (unrelated to shin splints). Ice and anti-inflammatories are good for temporary solutions. Rest (at least a few days), stretching, and a well fitting pair of shoes are essential. If you let it go for too long like I did, it'll take weeks for it to heal completely. At the worst, I was having to take anti-inflammatories just to be able to walk to classes the day after playing basketball. |
