Does diabetes cause someone's behaviour and personality to change when they are in the process of blacking out or going into diabetic shock?
When my bf doesnt eat it takes a couple hours for him to actually pass out, but sometimes his behaviour and emotions change drastically. If I talk to him during that time he can be mean and say harsh things or be like a little kid and be very playful. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks! |

my dad had diabetes and the only thing i can relate too is the blacking out, i dont think it causes a shift in behavior, my father cursed people out when he felt fine and when he was going into shock so there was stability
perhaps your BF is depressed or has a mild case of bi-polar |

He has major mood swings and he says he has a chemical imbalance. Also, he is considered a fragile diabetic, so maybe its a combination of things.

its not his diabeties, its his chemical imbalence (which is in the brain) if he didnt have diabetes he would still be the same, except without blacking out and whatnot |

Yeah it just seems worse when he needs to eat.
Like when his blood sugar gets low and he needs to eat, he gets really cranky and short tempered. After he eats, he goes back to normal. Last edited by bigheart09; 09-26-2007 at 02:03 PM. |

I thought that was just men in general - if they are sleepy or hungry, they become a bear??
Okay now really, I doubt that the diabetes and mood swings go hand in hand. But not eating a well balanced diet is not good for anyone and I am sure affects his body much more intensely than your average joe. Not eating a healthy diet is bad physically and mentally.... I wonder though . . . when someone has "chemical imbalances," if not eating is worse for people that do not. (Sorry - speaking outloud.) Hhhmmmm - I wish I had more to add BigHeart - How ya doing? Hugs!

Thanks ITG!
It just seems like when he is stressed, his diabetes is harder to control, therefore so is his mental stability. Just wondering if there was a connection. |

One time I had to wake him up after he just passed out, and he was playful and childlike and then in the matter of minutes started yelling at me and even punched a hole in the wall. When he finally drank some juice, he didnt even remember anything and was appalled that he punched a hole in the wall and yelled at me.
