smoking.. to much stress
I've never smoked before, but I've been going through a lot of stress for the past couple years. I've tried so hard to get rid of the stress, but I just don't know how. I want smoking to be a last resort type of thing, but are there any other things i can do to relieve this stress?
Well, thanks for reading |

- watch television - jump on the internet - slap hot mustard on your chest - lay naked in the street claiming you eat your own poo - cook - take a class - take a walk - go talk too random people - go back too work - go too school - wedge a box of cherrios up you butt and proclaim your an alpha male - talk too toddlers theres endless possibilities |

Well, smoking is a pretty stupid thing to start to alleviate stress.
Smoking does not work that way - the reason for some it alleviates stress it is because it feeds their addiction..often they are stressed as they are not having a smoke at that point in time. Their body craves the smoking, and the stress gets higher when they are not feeding it. The stress of future emphysema, lung cancer, throat cancer, more wrinkling and toxic chemicals does not alleviate stress either. Try exercise - like going for a run or throwing around the basketball in the driveway or with friends, or writing it down, or talking to a friend or calling one you have not talked to in a while and going out, learning to cook something new, meditation and/or yoga, rent a movie and chill out, read a good book to escape, and so on. Seriously, I have a lot of major "stressors" in my life by most accounts, but manage to actually be quite unstressed through these kinds of things and keeping in mind when things are bad,..."this too shall pass".

Honestly, I have so much stress that it's almost impossible. My brother has the same issue, so he smokes marijuana. He said it works for him, but i don't want to do the things he does, because it changed him a lot.
Is there something a doctor could prescribe or something? Some sort of medication atleast... |

Smoking doesn't releive stress. You only think it does. When that cigarrette is done your in the same position.
you really need to think about what is stressing you out, and make a plan so you can sort it out, or at least make it manegeable. |

Believe me, I remember when I was your age how everything seemed overwhelming...but in time I realized I was totally mistaken It is FAR better to learn to manage your stress, because if you don't, and just rely on medication, you fail to develop important tools that are truly essential in life; like when family members get ill and you need to care for them, or a close friend dies, or you are at threat of losing a job or are laid off and can't afford the bills, rent or mortgage anymore, or have young children adding to less sleep and more hectic life, or are working and going back to school and balancing family/rest of life, or are going through process of buying a house...and so on. Well if you have high anxiety, there are certain medications...but even they require you to do other things to alleviate it. And it has other side effects and should be only done if you really do have a problem. But it does not hurt to talk to your doctor.

My school work. I've missed so much of my work lately that it's almost impossible to get back.
My mom is in the hospital right now and i'm worried about her. My brother lives in a bad part of town and he does some of the stupidist thing that will get him killed! My ex girlfriend So many other things... I'm just not experienced at getting rid of this kind of stress. I've been takeing some sleeping medicine so I don't have to be awake to witness this stress, but when I am awake, it's horrible.. |

Here Atticus, have a pack of Camels. That'll have you puking some sense back.
Seriously, smoking doesn't help. I used to smoke a lot to deal with stress, and it's as you say...what you really need is to learn better coping skills for when the inevitable stresses of life come your way. The sleeping pills are worrisome too.

back in my day we faced our stress and said "BRING IT MOFO, IM not afraid of you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
we got up at 1 am school started at 7 am we got up at one ran 5 miles too the water well got some water put it in a bucket brought it back home and set a match under it and it took about 2 hours too heat up. at three am we would all wash up in the same bathroom at the same time, it wa sembarrasing and we hated it. then we would proceed too put on some hand me down that was to small for us. i wore the same jeans 5 years in a row. then we would all hike too school, thats right hike too school, and we carried a butchers knife beacuse a wild man eating bear always tried too attack us. then when we got too school we was hungary beacuse we hadent ate since 2 days ago. we sat in class hungary crying but learned our material went too the cafeteria and they served us a peice of bread and some rice. and we went back too class. school was from 7 am too 5pm M-F, we would get out and hike right back home and pull out that butcher knife and kill a cobra that tried too poisen us. after we got in the house we went right back out too go fishing too have something too eat, or we went hunting with no guns, we had too wrestle a deer with our bare hands (we would rip that deer in half like mighty men, and swing his body against a thick tree too make sure he died) and kill it, drag it back too the house for momma too cook. then we ran 5 miles too the water well too get some water, ran 5 miles back, then went too go get some wood too burn in the house. we got back in about 9pm and momma would cook the dinner which was ready by 12am and we ate went too bed at 12:30 woke up at 1 and repeated this day in and day out the point im making is, you have too face your stress head on, nothing can kill you unless you let it. we was dead tired and stressed out but we looked for brighter days, it was very very very hard too live like this but we did it, you dont have too turn too smoking you just need too realize the stress cannot over come you unless you let it Last edited by Sweet Buttabean Jellayroll; 09-19-2007 at 02:13 PM. |
