random yoga question
for those of you who are experienced with yoga:
i have a 50 minute yoga workout that i do and at the end is of course the relaxation where you just lay flat arms open to your sides and legs open... and it seems that whenever i hit this point... and im laying flat... i get the most ridiculous PAIN in my lower spine and it is like electrical and shoots through all around my back area.. mostly lower back and it makes it IMPOSSIBLE to lay there quietly and relax. its seriously the most uncomfortable thing ive ever experienced. and nothing fixes it unless i put up with the pain and lay there for like ten minutes. THEN it eventually dissapates. has anyone experienced this or know what the heck it is? i just hope im not injuring something. |

Yikes, that is bizarre - can you comfortably go into child's pose or another relaxing asana without feeling the pain shooting around? Do you notice the pain with any other asana besides corpse pose?

You should try an alternate pose where your knees are bent. I have problems with my lower back and I do the variation.

Well, yoga should not cause pain. As any instructor will tell you, if it hurts, back off!
It almost sounds like a sciatic nerve issue - I would recommend you go see a physiotherapist to figure out what is going on, and in meantime avoid full corpse pose - do a variation with your knees bent and feet flat on floor for example.

but then at the end of the workout when i repeat that pose, is when it happens. so its almost like it has something to do with what i've done to my spine within the workout. childs pose is always fine. its strictly when im laying flat on my back. and unfortunately, putting my knees up doesnt change it. so long as my back is flat on the ground, it HURTS. i will consider asking a professional. or at least ask my chiropractor? is that something he would know? thanks everyone for your help. |

I know what you're talking about because I've experienced something similar. I am mostly uncomfortable when I am in this position and I believe that I experience this when I lose my flexibility by not practicing yoga for a long time.
However, what works for me is to do the variation of using a folded blanket and place under your back in line with the spine. That is, starting from your lower back and stopping at either midway through the spine or at the end of your neck. It always works for me. However, I'd agree with the other posters that since it is a sharp pain that lasts for quite a while, I'd recommend you see a professional just to be on the safe side.
