skipping dinner/weight loss

okay, ive heard from many people that when they skipped dinner, they lost weight.

is this credible? not to say its the healthiest thing in the world,
but if you eat a hearty and healthy breakfast and lunch, it would seem your body is able to metabolize those calories easy and then going to bed with an empty stomach would mean less food that would just be columnating and not being worked off with movement. resulting in weight loss...

It worked for me but I also ended up developing an eating disorder so don't do it. Skipping meals is the wrong way to go about loosing weight.

I think you're just setting yourself up for getting really weak and hungry, and eventually blowing your diet. A better way would be to not eat anything after 6 pm. It's the late evening calories that don't get burned off that pack on the weight.

instead of skipping dinner, eat a light dinner at least 4 hours before going to bed.
eat a large lunch instead...

having a full stomach when you go to sleep isnt particularily good for you.

You'd lose more weight, actually, by eating a light supper with the hearty breaky/lunch.

Otherwise, you put your body into a starvation-gorging cycle. Yeah, the meals you are eating aren't normally considered gorging, but if you are starving yourself for 10+ hours of the day (8 hours sleep, plus wake time when you'd eat supper) then the body would feel it as a gorge.

Better to eat consistently through the day. Always is better. Just don't eat junk.

Actually, that whole "eating late at night makes you fat" thing is a myth.

From "Myths, Lies and Downright Stupidity: Why Everything You Know is Wrong" by John Stossel [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] hardcover pg. 222

Quote:
Myth: Eating late at night makes you fat
Truth: It doesn't matter when you eat

We hear this one all the time: Eat late at night, and you'll get fat because you won't exercise the calories away.

But at the Oregon Health and Science University, scientists studied forty-seven female monkeys, keeping detailed records of precisely what they ate and when. The animals that ate their food at night were not the ones that gained the most weight. In fact, there was no correlation between eating at night and gaining weight.

But people do gain weight eating late at night. Not because we metabolize food differently then, but because many people save their highest fat snacks like ice cream, chips, and chocolate for the end of the day. I do that. I binge at night. People are appalled at how much popcorn, ice cream, and chocolate I can put away right before bedtime. I compensate by skipping breakfast. I'm not reccommending this.

But the bottom line is that the researchers say midnight snacking won't make you fatter simply because you eat it late at night. What makes you fatter is taking in more calories than you burn.

A calorie is a calorie no matter when you eat it.

Hmmm...I would think that if you eat later at night, then go to bed shortly afterwards, that's eight to 12 hours the calories have to turn into fat, because you're not exercising in time to burn them off.

Never, never skip meals. Perhaps have a hearty breakfast and lunch and then a light dinner. Think about it, if you skip dinner and go to bed and sleep for say, 7-8 hours, that is MANY hours your body did not have food, like between 12-14 hours before you eat again. Depending on when you go to bed and get up in the morning. That is almost an entire DAY when one is awake not eating. What sense does that make?

Many people mistakenly believe that skipping meals will lead to weight loss. Quite the contrary, a person may GAIN weight or weight loss with plataeu because the body "thinks" it is starving. So, metabolism may slow down, thus weight gain or no weight loss.

The body is an amazing piece of machinery. It knows what it needs. Think of the body as a furance and what does a furnace need to burn properly? FUEL! Well food is fuel for the body.

Yes, I agree with Shes2Smart about eating late at night causing weight gain. Not true. I mean I do not recommend eating a extra large banana split before bed but having a very light snack does not hurt.

I repeat, skipping meals is a no-no. Eat sensibly and exercise! There is no getting around excerise in order to lose weight.
