Why can't I?
For the past three months or so, all I can think about is becoming a Marine Officer. I want this so bad, I have never felt so passionate about anything in my life before, not even a guy!
I went and talked to the recruiting agent, not to be recruited but to get an idea of how things were. I called the Officer in charge of the ROTC and left a voicemail. Never heard anything back. I watch all these videos on youtube of candidate getting yelled at and bossed around, and I think to myself that it's nothing. I can deal with that. My father was a Marine and my whole life he was my DI. These guys don't scare me. My only fear is that I'm going to lose control and talk back. I need to get off my butt and start running. That's the only thing that can hurt me on the PFT. I love this country and I would do anything for it. I want to be a Marine so that I can ensure that my parents (my father recently retired) can live a free life. My dad fought for that for me and I want to fight for that for him, and for my children, and for everyone. In the movie 300, they say the greatest honor is to die on the battlefield. That's how I want to go. I want to be fighting for something I believe in. Why am I having such a hard time doing this? I want it, I really do, way deep deep down in my heart, I need this. |

It seems, on the face of your post, that this is something you want to do. What stops you from simply going to the recruiter and signing up??? Is it the finality of your decision? Or is it some lingering doubt whether this is really something you want to do?

I think it's fear of failure. But you never know until you try, right? And as much I would hate to fail at something like this, I would hate even more to wander through life thinking "what if."

Do it man. Fear is the thief of dreams. Besides the real fear will come later when some hater is pointing a AK47 at you.

I was in the Marines. Bulk Fuel Specialist. Switched over to the Army though, so you'll have to forgive me! Are you thinking of first doing a tour as enlisted and then applying for OCS.. or going through a 4 year college ROTC program and coming out as 2LT? I'm not very smart, but I'll do my best to answer your questions!

All is forgiven, but I can't see why you would do something like that.
I'm actually going into my junior year, and have already passed the deadline for the two-year scholarship. I talked to the guy at the recruiting station and he told me I could do PLC and then OCS. If I don't get financial aid, I don't have to accept my commission. I could go through the ROTC program and then go to OCS. I just get scared that I'm going to be the only one that has no clue what's going on, which is ridiculous, I guess, because I've spent 18 years "in" the Corps. Do they teach you all the acronyms? How did you go through it? How did you survive DIs? |

[Only registered and activated users can see links. ] [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] I watch these, and instead of going "oh my god why do I want to put myself through this?" I think "I can't wait!" Does that make me crazy? Last edited by scaredtodeath; 06-04-2007 at 08:37 PM. |

Most of the people that go into basic training don't even know how to do a proper push-up or stand at attention. They will indoctrinate you. They will hate you and break you down, but they hate everyone the same. You don't need to know anything going into it. In fact, it's better not to know much, because you may pick up a bad habit or a wrong fact. They want you to learn things "their way". Memorize all your ranks, general orders, weapons safety rules, rifle creed, a little bit of history if you want (Putnam Tavern) etc. That's all you need to know. The Air Force, Army, Navy, and Coast Guard all coddle to females. But in the Marines you will be held to the same exact physical and mental standards as a male. Your dad would probably know alot more than me. Enlistment is a rough way to go. Especially Platton Leadership Course to OCS. Long road. I was just a grunt. Good luck!

Was just talking to BF and he finally realizes how much I want this and told me to go ahead. I think him not being okay with it was holding me back some, and I'm taking this opportunity before he can take it back. I'll let you know what happens!
