weight loss

Whats up guys? I'm new to the site and fairly new to running. I might ask some newbie questions, but i appreciate any response that i get. I was wondering, as far as weight loss is concerned, is it better to run after a big meal (dinner) or beforehand? i weigh around 150 or so and i'd like to lose about ten pounds in around 4 weeks. that might sound like a lot but im trying to lose some love handles as well as other areas of annoying pudginess (that i gained during my freshman year of college). with the right diet and about 3-4 miles of running 5-6 times a week, is this task possible? im getting ready to join a gym so i can mix up some of my cardio excercises. Thanks.

Running and power walking is EXCELLENT for shedding weight. The best time to exercise is first thing in the morning before you eaten anything. Make sure you have 5 small meals a day to keep you metabolism going.
Breakfast, morning tea (fruit), lunch, afternoon tea (fruit) and dinner. Make sure you have a SMALL dinner EARLY like at around 5pm. Let you stomach settle for abour an hour and then you can work out again.

Remember, cardio will shed pounds but it won't tone you up so I would do a a little bit of light weight training on the side just to keep everything taut and tight.

If you want to REALLY burn fat, make sure you excersize before you eat. Do not wait until you are hungry, make sure it is like 2 and a half hours after you eat...or in the morning before breakfast. Your body needs to kick it up and use the fat reserves you have as energy...then after you excersize, have a healthy protein-rich meal. You don't want to lose muscle. Unless you are running a marathon or cycling 80 miles in one leg, you do not need to carb-load. That is for quick useful energy. I have some annoying pudginess to that I am trying to lose...stick to healthy eating and take your supplements while you diet ! Good luck and take care of yourself !

If you expend more calories than you take in, you will certainly lose weight. When you are running, fast-walking, on the stationary bike, what have you - go for at least 20 minutes, but never over 45. Personally, I feel just right at 30 minutes. I have lost a noticable amount of weight in only the past 2 or 3 months by using the stationary bike at semi-high intensity for 30 minutes a day, a few days a week. Do not try to workout every day. Your body needs to rest. If you push yourself too hard by doing it 7 days a week, you could easily tear a muscle.

The key, of course, is to get into the habit of exercising/working out frequently -- say, 4 to 5 times a week -- for at least a couple of weeks. You are typically not going to see results right away. But if you stick to it, you will begin to notice changes as the days and weeks go on.

It is said that weight loss is 70% nutrition, 30% exercise... so work it into your diet. But by no means starve yourself. If you deprive yourself of calories and the basic nutrients, you are not keeping the body in balance.

Out of curiosity:

What's wrong with doing more than 45 minutes of intense running?

I seldom go running for less than 45 minutes. I also know other runners who train for marathon or ultramarathon and god knows they run more than 45 minutes daily.

I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm just curious as to what exactly is the reason of such a statement? Was it proven scientifically or is it just some fact that I'm not aware of?

Thanks

I think that perhaps it might mean that your body could start burning muscle tissue after a certain point as well as the fat. There is a new book out called "The cardio-free diet" which focuses on building muscle to burn fat instead of intensive cardio...here is an article link about the book;

I am not sure which stance I take, I just know that without weight training, and dieting, my body looked like olive oyl. You must combine good nutrition, weights and cardio for a healthy heart (and stamina) I think there is a balance in everything. I like the body-for-life program by Bill Phillips, I looked KICK BUTT when I did the 12 week program. If you look at runners, most of them aren't cut or sculpted, because they are using so many resources to run. I prefer the sculpted look for myself. It is just amazing to me how we can change our physical appearance so much just with what we eat and how we move. You can be your own project...your own piece of art!

Now if I can just stay away from the dill-pickle potato chips...

Cardio is brilliant for conditioning the heart, building stamina, and overall sense of well-being. If you are after those things, enjoy running! Train properly, stretch, and don't push yourself too hard.

BUT...

Cardio is practically useless for fat burning. Sure, if you like to do it it doesn't HURT, but it is certainly not necessary. That concept, along with the concept of several small meals per day AND the "Food Pyramid" are pretty much bunk.

You want to drop weight? Eat lots of vegetables and proteins (avoid processed meats) and stay away from bread, cereal, pasta, and sweets. If you CAN, then adopt an intermittent fasting cycle where you either eat one day and fast the next, or eat for a given period out of any day, leaving between 20 and 24 hours between eating periods. That's it. Running is icing on the cake, but not even a MARGINAL miniscule contribution really, as compared to the dietary changes.

For more information research low carb diets (which they have proved are extremely healthy, though they don't know why, and since it flies in the face of what they BELIEVE they still aren't routinely publishing a lot of it) and also research intermittent fasting (which has been shown to have ALL the physical benefits of calorie restriction, long known to extend life and health, without the mental suffering of calorie restriction). Happy reading!

Thanks for all of the helpful responses guys. I'll definitely take all of them into consideration. One more question. My work day starts at around noon and i dont get off until six. should i excercise after i get off for about 45 min (an hour before dinner) or should i wake up in the morning, do a small work out and then excercise again an hour and a half after eating dinner? Thanks again.
