I feel so insecure about my weight, even when others tell me I shouldn't be

I was told I was fat throughout most of my life by the boys at school, until I moved to a different school this year in high school. Now, I am always told by both my guy and girl friends that I am pretty and that I have a great body, but I just can't feel like it's true coming from my old school where I was constantly tormented about my body even as a small child.

Currently, I am 5' 6" and I weigh 115 pounds. I hope with the anonymity of the internet, people will tell me honestly whether I should lose five or ten pounds, or stay the same as I am now. This really strongly effects my confidence levels and any feedback would be helpful. Thanks guys!

Hey There,

5'6" and 115 pounds, you BMI is 18.6, which is .1 above the 'underweight' catagory. You are more than fine- perhaps a bit underweight.

If you are legitimately concerned about weight- why not schedule an appointment with your physician and have a checkup?

Sweetheart, you're perfectly fine the way you are.

If you were being teased before over your size, it is quite possible that they were jealous or just plain mean and/or stupid.

You don't need to lose a pound and you have no reason to feel the least bit self-conscious over your weight. Honestly! I have no reason to lie to you, as this is coming from a total stranger on the internet.

18.4 or under is underweight, so she cannot be 'underweight.' Close to it, but not underweight. Just because the average weight in the world (aside from developing countries) is going up drastically, doesn't mean being 'normal' should be considered low.

BMI doesn't look at the average weight of the world, it is calculated using height and weight and factors estimating bone and muscle mass. She's almost underweight, having less body fat is worse for women then men. Women need about 12% of the body weight to be fat so that they're bodies can function properly, such as normal menstruation.

She's low weight.

I'm around the same BMI. Guess I'd better head to McDonald's!

Oh wait, I already went there today.

Besides, you should know as well as I that BMI is limited in that it doesn't account for bone size or structure, or the type of build one possesses.

Well it doesn't matter what anyone tells you...you are the one who needs to believe it.

What do you see when you look in the mirror??

How do you see yourself physically, overall??

You may just have a self image problem. And I am sure the teasing in your other school did not help. Ask yourself do you believe this to be true. Sometimes we carry these messages from our past into the present, and we never stop to check if these messages/ thoughts in our heads have any truth to them at all. The teasing happened in the past, you have switched schools, you are told you look more than fine, the event of the teasing is in the past, you need to learn to leave it there, because it no longer is occuring today. But if you have these negative messages embedded in your thoughts then you are initially creating this weight issue within yourself. Because everyday you are replaying those messages of the past over and over and you are believing them to be true when they aren't.

I am sure your appearance is fine. You just need to believe it is, and stop listening to that voice in your head telling you it isn't.

Wil, does it matter? The point is, a BMI of 18.6 is NOT heavy in any shadow of the imagination. I don't care what country you are from, or what BONE SIZE or structure one has, to be that height at that weight is erring on the side of too underweight vs too overweight. It really wouldn't matter much about her bone size with a BMI of 18.6 ... the statement that she is closer to underweight than overweight is accurate.

To the OP, you might be like i was. For some reason when i was little i was called 'chubby'. I was raised in a family of veyr very tiny bone thin cousins and aunts. i grew up THINKING i must be chubby. They even told me that sometimes. They made me feel like a cow, and looking back at my pics, i see now that i wasn't. I also had a very strict mom who would not let me slouch, i had to exercise with her so i wouldn't get fat, etc. It did a number on me. As a teen, i guess i just blossomed into young adulthood and i weighed 96 lbs at 4'11. I was pretty small but very proportioned. My cousins started to GAIN weight. I am now, even at 40, the slimmest of all of my family.

You might have had some baby fat that you shed as you grew up and you just didn't realize it. You are NOT fat and no way do you need to lose a lb.

well, your something like 15 pounds lighter than me, and you're my height...
I wouldnt mind losing a few pounds, but only to be about your weight... and NO thinner

I think once your ribs start showing above your boobs, your too thin.
although everyone carries weight differently

Perhaps you just feel healthy, try getting into yoga or soemthing and boost your body image
