I'm DETERMINED to lose the rest of the weight that's desperately clinging on from my pregnancy. It's three months exactly today since I've had my baby and so I start my diet/exercise regimine.
Any tips as to how to get off those pesky pounds? I want to lose 15 to start with (that'll get me back to my original size). I've always led a very active life and never had to lose weight, so this is kind of my first attempt at dieting. Help please!

Try the Special K diet. I have a girl friend that did it a month before her wedding and lost 12 lbs.
Weight watchers is good too. Cardio cardio cardio.

Low carb. You'll lose faster than anything, and it's healthy. But make sure to eat those veggies! This isn't the "Pound of Bacon a Day" diet!

I think it's important that you do not do anything drastic. Crash diets or diets that severly restrict or deprive you might work at first, but will not last in the long run. You need a plan that is do-able and realistic for the long-term.
I would start by keeping a food journal and also a record of your level of activity for each day. You need an eating plan that is very low on white carbs and refined sugars, high in protein, in suffiencent in "good" fats. What you should eat: 100% Whole grains, veggies, lean protein, lowfat dairy (1% or skim) and fruits that are not high in sugar (like berries), natural peanut butter, almonds, salmon. With this you should also incorportate exercise- cardio and light weight training. If you could manage to get to a nutritionist and personal trainer (even if it is just for ONE day to get their recommendations- you could write it all down and follow it on your own from there.) hi!
What are you doing for exercise right now?Could you tell us what your daily eating looks like? What about joining a class that involves your baby? I have some friends who are new mums, who go to fitness classes where they do exercises with their baby, swimming, running, many different types! Do you have a proper running stroller.. so you can take your baby out and go for a walk/run as well. What was your fitness level like before you had your baby? |

Just remember that diet is more important than exersice, but do both. I lost 50-60lb within a year my senior year in high school.
Here are a few things that I did to help with my diet. * Start a low calorie diet, avoid BAD carbs and fats. * RUN, that's the best exersice to burn calories. Sprinting hits the fat reserves, so jog for one minute and run for one munite and keep at this for 10-15 minutes then you can just jog for another 10 minutes streight. * Avoid anything that comes in a wraper (processed food). Unless it's organic, or natural. There are so many bad foods that you should avoid that I can't list them, so here are the ones you should eat: - Boiled beans (with little to no salt added) - boiled veggies - Peanut Butter (only organic and natural peanut butter). - Cattage cheese. I like putting this on my beans with some veggies too, yum. (make sure it's the 1% or the non-fat, and try to find one with low sodium if possible) - Whey protein, I ate like 2 shakes of this a day. - Eggs, remove the yellow stuff. For every three eggs leave one yolk. - Pancakes, with skim milk(non-fat milk) I can't think of anything else, but as you make this your lifestyle then you will know what's good for you and what's not. Good Luck. |

Thanks for all the suggestions!
I'm unclear on the whole "carb" thing. I don't know what bad carbs are. Like I said, I never had to watch what I ate before the baby so I'm clueless. I do try to eat very healthy for the most part...lots of salads with low fat or fat free dressings, mostly water but when I do drink soda, it's fat free...lots of chicken and fish. I do eat pasta frequently...are those bad carbs? Before I got pregnant I was surfing a lot, at least once a week. I'd go hiking, lived on second story apartments, running around all the time. But then I got pregnant and couldn't be as active and now I'm limited in things I can do because I have my baby all the time. I do walk everyday for at least an hour at a good speed and do situps, pushups, leg lifts, squats, etc. everyday. But those last pesky 10 pounds.

Bad carbs are white carbs (simple carbohydrates). Potatoes, regular pasta, sugar, bread, etc. They cause your blood sugar to rise and fall quickly, making you feel hungry again sooner, and putting that weight on. Make sure all of the carbs you eat are complex, or whole grain. Sweet potatoes, whole grain pasta, sugar that only comes from fruit, whole wheat bread, etc. Not only does your body break those kinds of things down slower, they've also got more fiber in them, both of which make you feel fuller faster and longer. I've been on a very strict low-carb diet before (like Jayar said, not the all-bacon-all-the-time diet) and it worked WONDERS for me, I loved it. The basic principle behind it is that your body burns whatever it can get it's hands on first for energy, and that thing is carbs. If you don't have a lot of carbs in your system, your body starts to burn fat. I lost 20 pounds easily, and have kept it off using the skills I learned while on the low-carb diet. It's a little hard to do now that I live closer to my mom and her good Southern cooking.
Just give yourself time. You will lose the weight, but now that the baby's screwed your body up inside and out, it'll be harder to keep off. Take advantage of those weekends that your ex has the baby and get back to surfing and stair climbing and such. Would you be able to join a gym that had a nursery? That's been a godsend for a good friend of mine. |

As a general rule if your food has carbs, then it better have fiber too. If it has carbs and no fiber, then don't eat it.
