Waiting on HIV results, HELP!
On this past Friday I just went to have my blood taken for HIV testing. I'm really, really nervous. I just found out from my last pap that I did get HSV2, and have read that sometimes if you get that, HIV goes hand and hand with that. I've been googling EVERYTHING, and I know that might be the worst thing I could do. I was with my ex for a year, and when we broke up, I dated this one guy as a rebound for about 2 months. We had unprotected sex a couple of times....was the worst decision I've ever made, b/c here I sit now, wondering if my life will dictated by a virus that seems to me to be a death sentence. No marriage, no kids...and the humiliation at that....does anyone really know of people who got HSV2, and HIV at the same time? I'm so scared. I also think that I'm scaring myself so much that I give myself symptoms I've never had before in my life....I freak out over the smallest of things, any advice or comforting words would be much appreciated. Also, does anyone know how long it might take for HIV to show? I've read up to 3 mo. if they do a particular test, a friend said up to a year?! Please advise.

welcome to enotalone. The number I've heard is 3 months - 6 months. When was the last time you had unprotected sex?
The good news is that the odds are in your favor of NOT having HIV, it is not as common in heterosexual sex, and assuming neither of you are IV drug users. But, there is, of course, still a risk! I know it's hard, but try to relax. at this point, there is nothing else you can do. Chances are that the results will be negative. but in the future, be more careful! (i'm sure you know that by now.) good luck |

I appreciate your reply. I see this as God's way of warning me. At least that's what I hope it is. I've never been more scared in all of my life. I hope the odds are in my favor, and yes, the next time will be when I'm married and we've both been checked for STD's.

Hi LuckBeaLady
Well its good you got tested as the sooner you know one one or the othere the more you opations. HIV tends to take thows who dont find out nower days. I have a mate whos been HTV+ for years and hes doing very well. But Its the stress of waiting to find out thats bad I know I have had some thing like this happon to me some year back, had to wait 2 weeks not a good time. Then as now your chances are low even with HSV2, as you only had sex a few times proberbiultys on your side here. The worry will come out as a 1000 symptoms, but there all just Shadow tigers all in the mind. If you get realy bad go see you doc for some slepping pills. Its this waiting time that will stress you out take your time and think about life, you will get that flash of fear on and off, it will hit you when you take some time of it but work at facing it. Rember to eat and sleep just like befor and the time will pass untill you know. rember time keeps going even if your worred so it will pass and you will now. But chances are your fine rember that. Also use this time to talk to your doc about HSV2 as your in the 1st year best keep this in cheack you have lats to find out about that. Stats wise the reson why HSV2 and HIV go hand in hand is that Sex workers tend to get them and so sque the stats. Your not a l"ady of the night" or a porn star who have a large number of sex partnesrs so I would not count this as your chances. well all the best but I think you will be fine. when you say you have a mate who is hiv+, is that your spouse? If not, are they married, how is their life? I worry so much that if I did get it, mine would be over.

Hi There,
The incubation for the HIV virus is typically 12-24 weeks. It is true that if you have HSV2 you are at increased risk of contracting HIV, but they do not always go hand in hand. The important thing is that you have been tested, and now you can receive treatment for the Herpes. Try to take this one step at a time, and not go online to self diagnose- you are right that is the worst thing that you can do to yourself. When do you get the results?

I was told that it will take about a week to get the results, if that is in fact true, then hopefully I should know by this coming Friday!!! I sure hope it's negative.....I'm praying.

LuckBea,
Many, many people get HSV2 without getting HIV. HSV2 is, in fact, fairly common, though quite unpleasant. If you are not in a "high-risk" group for HIV, then don't stress so much about the test. Odds are, you don't have it. I do have some friends who are HIV+, but they don't have HSV2. Take care and many hugs! Dawn |

Take some deep breaths and try to keep yourself busy this week. Stressing out and researching something that may not even be an issue for you is only making things worse.
You will get through this week, and hopefully everything will be negative, and it was a good wake up call for you to protect yourself in the future!

This post sure does help me a lot. Thank GOD for this site. Makes it much easier to type about it to people who care, but don't really know me. This sure does help. Dawn, thanks for your post. Your friends w/ HIV, what are their lives like? I'm so curious about it. I'm glad to know that they don't have HSV2, lucky for me, knock on wood, I'm really healthy, and active, and even under all this stress, I have yet to have another outbreak.....
