Do you ever sleep just to dream?

You can't get up because you don't want to leave the world you're alive in, the dream world, and at the slightest moment you wake up you want to go back to sleep, creating a never ending sleep so you could be awake in a happier world.

Is that what death is like? An afterlife?

Well the "death and afterlife" bit is gonna lead you into multiple people talking about religion... as I'm athiest I'd say no its not death/afterlife. As there is no such thing as an afterlife from my perspective BUT

getting to the dream aspect... I had a dream this morning which I slept longer just to experience it longer. It was about this girl i met at a party the other night, and it was amazing. Had a great time in my dream that I actually woke up feeling better for some reason. Interesting how our minds can trick us each day.

Haha, this may be waaay out there but your question reminded me of this story: There's this Chinese philosopher (Don't know the English version of his name ...) who once had a dream that he was a butterfly.

Upon waking up, he questioned which was the dream and which was reality: he thought that perhaps, he was a butterfly having a dream about being a person ...

To answer the first question, it depends. I often have pleasant dreams where I'm dating the girl of my dreams and we are just about to kiss when the dream ends. No kidding, it always happens! Sometimes I dream that I have tons of money and I'm going on vacation or something. I know it sounds shallow but it's very pleasant while it lasts.

To answer the second question: my religion says that the afterlife may be like a dream but this is only if you've died violently or unexpectedly, and even then it doesn't last for ever. If you've died naturally, you either go to 'heaven' (which is basically peace) or you are reborn.

Ellie2006: good question! According to Hindu philosophy, both are illusions.

I have dreams about tornados that are SO cool. I am very alive and thrilled, not scared. I hate waking up from those. And my "the sky is covered in weird fireworks-like explosions, amazing jet-like spaceships, and planets close enough that you seem to be able to touch them" dreams, even though they are kind of scary... It's beautiful. I hate coming back to Mundania, hubby and 2 small kids. Love them, but I love the escape!!! Those dreams are frequent, but not nearly enough.

I have kind dreams and mean dreams.
The strongest dreams I can remember are the ones I will willingly go back to sleep for in hopes of continuing it. Most leaving me with an emotion so strong that it will effect me for weeks, usually depressing.

In my dreams I am always happy, I am never in pain, even when I am dying. Usually when I wake from one of those dreams, I wait for it to return, I wish it were true the, I either cry or try to fall back into sleep to continue it.

Lasting emotions forever...

Have you seen "Waking Life" ? If not, you should check it out. Pretty interesting little film discussing that very topic.

My dreams are close to reality. I go to work in them. I eat in them. I just had a dream that I smoked lots of weed with a massive circle of arm linked people.

New Horizons:

From what I know about dreams, they are made up of material that already exists in your brain. So maybe the reason the dream keeps ending before you kiss the girl is because you've never kissed her in real life, so your brain doesn't "know how" to dream it. I used to dream about kissing my girlfriend, and before we actually kissed, the dream would end. After we had kissed a few times, then the dream wouldn't end anymore. Just a thought.

To the OP:

I'm not sure any of us are qualified to say but it's an interesting thought. Just curious, what religion are you?
