He's diabetic?

Today, my boyfriend of almost three years went into hospital. He'd been feeling very ill, weak and dehydrated for around 2 weeks. I wasn't really worried about him, just thought it was a winter bug, yet over the past two days, he'd been finding it increasingly hard to get up and walk around, due to night time cramping in his leg muscles (that he'd had over the two weeks)
I researched these symptoms on google, and it came up with diabetes. I've had no contact with him since half eight this morning, when he was admitted. his mum phoned me around lunch time, saying he's definitely got diabetes and will be staying overnight, if not a few days in hospital. I'm going to see him tommorow.
How did this just develop? He's only 19, I always associated this condition with older people. Will this affect our everyday life much? I don't know much about diabetes at all.

It's easy to become a diabetic it's either inherited or due to poor eating habits.I almost died from a diabetic coma in 1999 that's how i found out i was a diabetic. I was eating poorly and diabetes runs in my dad side of the family. I think everybody should have their blood tested or learn the hard way.

There are a couple types of diabetes. If it does not run in his family, and is not genetic, it does not mean he cannot get the other type!

Type 1 is insulin dependent and genetic, often called juvenile diabetes. Your body cannot produce insulin.

Type 2 is often brought on at a later age when your body fails to convert insulin properly. It can often be treated with diet and exercise, with or without insulin.

Many people these days are getting at younger ages what used to be "age onset diabetes" (Type 2) as they basically are out of shape; they eat like crap, and are overweight.

So, I am not sure whether he has Type 1 or Type 2, since I don't know him or his medical history! But he will know by the time he leaves the hospital as well as how to manage it.

This is where I got confused because he's thin, eats well and no one in his family has ever had it. Perhaps someone waay down the family line . . I'm just worrying I guess.

My brother was diagnosed with Diabetes a few years ago, and now there's not much he can't do. It just takes a little while to get everything under control. At first he basically ate 6 full meals a day. Now everything is much more managable and he can eat whenever he wants (and whatever he wants). If your boyfriend eats good and is thin, then it's probably type 1 diabetes, like my brother has. If you want to talk or anything, send me a pm. I pretty much know all there is to know about it.

It's more likely Type 2. It's unlikely that Type 1 would have gone unnoticed until he was 19 years old. Type 2 can develop at any age, not just middle age. Many Type 2 (and type 1) people are thin. Since the body is partially unable to utilize carbohydrates like healthy people, it burns fat or protein for energy.
Did they run a test on thyroid and adrenal hormones?

Type 1 can develop any time from childhood to teenage years even into their 30s. In those cases where it's not seen until later, the body has some insulin stored but can't produce any more or doesn't produce enough to work efficiently. When my brother was first diagnosed his body was still producing some insulin but not nearly enough, they call this the "honeymoon period". Once his body stopped producing any insulin, it was much easier to control.

I'm not saying that her boyfriend definitely has type 1, I just think it's more likely for him to have type 1. Type 2 usually occurs in overweight people, or elderly people. And she said he has no family history of diabetes and he eats well. Type 2 is usually caused by genetics and poor diet/high body weight.

Yep, found out it was type one.. Went to see him last night. It's all a bit much to take in, but I think he's handling it pretty good. Still don't know when he's coming out. I miss him so much. He'd gone into 'keto' or something, they gave him a booklet to read all about it. His blood sugar level was dangerously high at 27 and should've been between 4 and 8. So glad we caught it in time.
