Can working out make you angry?
Okay I've heard a lot of people say how if you exercize lots you'll feel better and happier.
Well I have been going to the gym fairly frequently, doing a mix of weights and cardio and going at it fairly hard. The thing is when I'm done I often feel really angry. As if I want to jump into a boxing fight. Is this a normal thing to happen? To exercize really hard and come out in a fired up but bad mood?

hey
i've been a regular member of a gym for the past 4 years, and i can't say i've ever felt 'angry' before (unless i get the stitch or something equally annoying while exercising). though, that said, i have left the gym on many ocasions where i've felt fired up, for me, the feeling usually is more engery, like i could run and jump around and just generally pumped. prehaps what your feeling is something like that, only because its a different feeling, you don't quite know how to handle it so you feel angry... i don't really know sorry. well, how do you generally feel about the gym? is it a possitive thing (like before you go to the gym, are you happy to exercise, or is it like a chore) because it is possible that the anger you are feeling could be related to doing something you don't reallly want to do, you know what i mean.... ...well, i hope this kind of helps...

Hmm how do I generally feel about the gym.. let's see how well I can explain this. I think I could liken it to how I feel about studying for an exam or going to work when I'm working in an area that I enjoy.
I actually want to go. I go because I want to go. (Well I want to be better looking and the best way I can think of doing that is to lose flab and the best way for me to do that is to exercize and the best way for me to exercize is to go to the gym, but that really works out to going to the gym because I want to). I don't know if I'd say it was something fun.. then again I don't know what I do that counts as fun, but I do want to go and I want to work hard there and I pretty much go in each time and push myself to the limit. I do sort of feel fired up but it's a different sort of fired up. Like when you go see a band you like and they play your favorite song you feel or fired up and start dancing or when you're favorite sporting team scores you feel fired up and start cheering, it's not that sort of fired it. It's more one where I feel angry and want everyone to get out of my way etc.

I don't know if angry is the word... but feeling like i have the ability to kill something, sure.
Its a strange euphoria... I don't like that feeling, so i hate working out. -ForAnother

Why not join a boxing class? Take your anger out on someone protected with pads? Just don't physically overstrain yourself.

Hey Mister!
How long have you been working out regularly for? If you're just getting into it as a regular part of life sort of deal, your body may be adjusting to the new levels of hormones flowing through those veins. The longer you work out, the less of a problem this should be. Your moods should be more consistent and even. Honestly, my moods are crazy, without exercise to level them out I would be even wackier than i am now. BTW: I love the pump. Great feeling. Doesn't have that angry quality to it - it is intense and blissful, like a confidence high. The length of each individual work out and activity can influence it too. Also, the outlook you bring to the activity. Competitive stuff can actually drain you out and leave you angry if the cool down period isn't enough. Your food, what your work outs are sandwiched in between, other areas of your life....man, it could be a lot of things! Maybe you need to extend or modify your workouts to include more warm-and-cooling and/or more relaxation based activity. Does your gym have a trainer or anyone like that: could ask them. Are you working out on a program or just sort of doing what you can/winging it? I am no expert, just talking from my own experiences. |

Thanks everyone!
Angleeyez, I have thought about taking up boxing, or playing rugby or something. But well I get all phobic about how it will affect my face. itsallgrand, I've been going to the gym on and off for the past 4 years but this year I started going reguarly and making an effort to progress with things. So i guess the answer is about a year. There are trainers whom I've been asking questions and stuff. Although it's been more about the best ways to become lean. Generally I'll either do something like 8 lots of 10 leg presses at around 450kg or do a mix shoulder presses, high pulleys etc at around 150kg. Reason being I go on saturdays and sundays to I split the two areas of my body up. In each case I try to increase the weight from week to week, although I've had trouble doing that with the leg press as I've managed to press at the maximum amount you can on their machine and there's a limited number of weights and sometimes others are using them so it's hard to put as much on as I'd like. I also do about 45-60 knee crunches and then do 45 minutes of cardio usually on the cross trainer. I used to do 30 but then I found afterwoods I'd be all pumped and energetic and so I had to go back on to utilize the energy. People have commented on how hard I go at the cross trainer too.. infact.. sometimes I find quietly yelling at myself you know commands like "come on" and others that shouldn't be repeated in enotalone, not in an audable tone though so only I hear it.

Heh, true, it will do some damage to your face. But, if you're quick enough in boxing, you'll never get hit

Yeah but by the time I become quick I will have been hit many time
I like using the leg press because it's something that requires a lot of physical effort but you don't get punched, tackled or stomped on in the process.

Whoa, way to go! You must be feeling some serious progress at that rate.
My pet passion is getting people to stretch/cool down/warm up. It may help? Won't lecture you on all the benefits to it, you already know i'm sure. Hopefully this anger thing subsides. |
