Ow!! I just got my wisdom teeth out...

I've tried doing a search online, but can't find anything, so I'm sorry if this is not appropriate for enotalone. If no one has any advice or anything, can you point me in the direction of a health-related website or message board?

I got my wisdom teeth out this morning. All was good until the novacaine wore off!! I actually thought i'd be able to go to work tomorrow, ha, was i fooled!

I'm not concerned about my recovery, I'm just not sure what is "normal" or if I should call the doctor (It's almost 10:30pm where I am, and I don't know if my surgeon's office has an ansewring service)

Here's what's going on:

I got out of surgery at about 11am this morning. After I take my acetaminophen/codeine pills I start to feel better, but then I got a hot flash and got really nauseous, so I laid down (on my side!!). I hadn't eaten anything so I was sure I wouldn't throw up.

Later around 7-7:30 I took some more pain meds and tried to eat something b/c i thought maybe it was my empty stomach that made me feel nauseous...Nope, I ate and about 10-15 min later I got the worst hot flash and had to lay down (i was scared i'd throw up, and that's deff doesn't sound like a good idea with my jaw hurting as bad as it does!)

That's really my main problem, except that I'm still bleeding. Not a lot, it finally started to slow down, but I still am, and it's annoying more than anything.

Please let me know if you have any advice.

Thanks.

I have been there and its best you just lay down and call into work tomorrow. Make sure you dont use any straws for beverages. I know that is not good for the place where the tooth once was. I think they call it dry socket.
I think that I just slept most of the day and ate very little. Try something like jello or something you dont have to chew. IF someone can go to the store and get you an ensure that may help stave off the hunger.

Pain = bad

If you feel pain, talk to your doctor, get a script and a note and relax... stuff hurts... don't be afraid to use modern medicine... as long as you don't become dependent on it...

I think you should call a 24 hour nurses line and see what they have to say. most of us here aren't medical professionals so we shouldn't give medical advice.

check the phone book, look for your hospital. most have a 24 hour nurses line that you can call and talk to a nurse, and they will tell you what is a good thing to do.

good luck

Hey there,

What you are feeling is normal. When I got my wisdom teeth pulled out, I was sedated. And when all the pain meds wore off....woah nelly! I woke up in tears and there was no way I was able to wait another hour to take my pain meds. I had to wait until 9PM and it was 8PM. I was able to take them.

My advice is to keep taking your pain meds as prescribed and get plenty of rest. I would stay home if I were you. And as far as food goes, try eating soup broth, pudding or jello. Or try sucking on some ice cubes if you could. Also, you are going to bleed for the next day or so, a tip I was given is to put an old towel over your pillow so you will not stain your pillow case.

Unfortunately, there is going to be some degree of pain after wisdom teeth removal. Your mouth and gums have many many nerves in it and any kind of surgery is to hurt. Hang in there, get rest, you be okay. Oh, do not be alarmed if your face swells like a chipmunk in the next do or so, completely normal as well.

Hope you feel better soon.

I even got a bruise on my cheek when I had my wisdom tooth pulled. OUCH! Good old fashioned rest and relaxation is the key.

I think I am the only person in the world to have had the opposite experience. i had practically no pain after I got my 4 wisdom teeth taken out. They were impacted, I needed surgery, I was put under. I ate solid food the same night.

But.... the doctor didn't give me enough anathesia, and I woke up in the middle of the surgery, while they were drilling my tooth in half, and I started screaming until they knocked me out again. It was really traumatizing!

For me, those prescritpion pain meds they give you after the extraction made me feel waaaaaay worse. Percoset (sp?) or Vicodin (sp?) I think. These narcotics made me feel like I was dead and dying a thousand deaths.

I stopped taking them after one day, just sucked up the pain of the extraction and in a few days, maybe a week, I was fine.

It's going to hurt, that's OK...just like a break up...only you can't go NC with your extracted wisdom teeth and sockets...or can you...

PS - about your health forum question... I've found that [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] is a pretty good resource.
