Post What would be the latest time a child starts to talk!!!!!

My brother's gonna turn 4 on May 5 and till this day he still doesn't really talk. It would be a real surprise to hear him all of the sudden say my name. Yes he does have speech delay, I heard some children start talking as soon as they start school.

Four years old is late

On average boys talk later than girls but most would certainly be sayin at least single words by 18 months to 2 years. Do you mean he says absolutely nothing or he is not saying sentences?

If he is saying absolutely nothing then you should have him checked out be a specialist. He may have a hearing problem for example.

It's not something to panic about. A nephew of mine did not really say anything meaningful until he was about 3 and a half and now, 2 years later you cannot stop him and he is at about the fluency level he should be for his age.

But I would definately have him checked out. There may be something there that is hindering him.

you said, "doesn't really talk" so I would assume he does SOME talking.

I think that's very normal. My brother didn't talk until he was about 4 either because he didn't need to. Everyone did eveything for him. He would just point and groan and my sisters would jump to fetch whatever he wanted or tell mom, "he wants juice!"

I wouldn't worry too much about it if he CAN talk but is choosing not to. Maybe just encourage him to but asking him what he wants and letting him answer.

If he can't form words, he may have significant hearing loss.

I have a sneaking suspiscion (whoa - sp??) though that he is just a little late for his own reasons.

Give him time and LOTS of encouragement.

My brother (who is 25 now) has autism and Pervasive Developmental Disorder. He really didn't begin speaking until he was four or so.

Has your brother been evaluated for hearing defecits and autism, and other learning disabilities?

Don't stress out about the talking. For now, focus on the other types of attention and connection you receive through your child- whether through eyes, laughter... doing things you know they like. As long as they feel you see them, they will bring themselves out more and more. You just have to pay attention. Don't worry so much about the specifics. There's not much you can do until the choice to talk more is made by the child himself. Until then, strive to strengthen the other ways. Every soul wants attention. That's all you really need to know.

His hearing is okay and no autism has been found on him, all they say he has is speech delay. He hears perfectly and definatley knows what to do and not do. All he says is water in spanish, he's always saying that when he's thrist and goes up to the fridge. Then he communicates in gestures, symbols, but I just wish he would actually speak up, say sentences or my complete name instead of just making sounds.
