Its great that you want to help your brother, but unless he wants to change, it'll be difficult to get him to change.
If you want to help him with his weight issues, maybe you could join a gym and ask him to be your workout partner. Or you can sign up for a 1/2 marathon, and ask him to be your training partner. When he tells you he's sad, and the reasons, do you listen and offer your understanding, or do you try to tell him solutions to his problems? I think listening and being supportive is more important for him right now. Only when he asks for advice, should you offer it. Right now he probably just wants an ear to listen to his troubles. Finally, it sounds cold, but if your brother wants to wallow in his self-pity, let him, and don't let it bring you down. You can only be responsible for your own actions. He is a grown man, and must take responsiblity for himself.

Ya know - Lost is really on it. I totally agree with him. You're great for wanting to help your brother. The best way for you to do that right now is to listen to him, be sympathetic and wait until he asks for your help. That'll mean he's ready to make a change.
