PMS Irritability and Anger
Just wondering if I can find anyone who relates and has any advice or has gotten through using meds or vitamins or anything like that.
Around the time of my period, usually a couple weeks before and sometimes even after, I just become VERY irritated with EVERYONE and EVERYTHING. A small thing like someone looking over at my computer screen gets me very upset and I have thoughts like..." why the $*&^ is she so damn nosy!" and makes me think of cursing her out. On a normal day, it wouldn't get to me. It would be annoying but I wouldn't feel like I wanted to jump out of my skin or do anything about it. That's the least of it though. I'm just stating that example because it happened two minutes ago. I have had episodes where I yell, scream, curse out my ex, and when I look back on it, I can't beleive that that was me. I'm usually VERY quiet and everyone I know describes me as "sweet". I've yelled at my mother for no good reason, I've flicked people off while driving, I've cursed someone out for a full hour. When I think about that, I feel horrible, because that's not who I am, and that's not how I want to be. But it HAPPENS once a month and I feel like I have no control over any of it. Can anyone give me any advice. I'm desperate right now. I don't know what to do. Thanks. |

You'll shortly realize that this is not a problem that any of us can physically help you with. It's in your head, and you just have to have a different mind-set to get past it, it's that simple.
I suggest you write down the specifics of what 'ticks' you off, the next time you're experiencing this anger/irritation. Then when you're more calm, re-read what you wrote, and actually try to rationalize where this inner anger comes from. Is there a reason? A cause? Also, just warn people that you're not having a good day prior to blowing up at them. I'm sure that many people would be happy to step aside to avoid being #$@#$ at for an hour. I don't think you need medication, or vitamins. I think you need to realize that you can overcome this with will power. If you don't change, your "nice image" may soon fade to nothing, and you'll be left with a life you never thought you'd deserve. Be good to people, you never know when karma can play it's role. |

Okay well, you do have control over it...because you can change it, and you have started by recognizing it and posting about it
Very few people suffer from actual PMS, but it sounds like you MAY be experiencing the radical hormonal fluctuations some women can get. The only thing is....two weeks ahead seems like it would not be directly PMS related. So you may want to chart this better to have a better idea if it hormonal related or not. If you ARE indeed suffering PMS, it IS due to chemical/hormonal fluctuations that for that VERY small percentage of woman is not controllable by mind alone. I would suggest you go and talk to your OB/GYN, they may recommend trying a birth control pill to regulate your hormones, or even prescribe a lower dose of Prozac which has been shown effective in reducing severe PMS-related mood swings. I also want to comment, that hormones or not, there is no excuse for treating others badly! So do look into some possible medical treatments with your OB/GYN, but I would also suggest some anger management courses, or one on one counselling sessions aimed at learning to better communicate your anger. Perhaps also look into yoga or meditation and other forms of physical activitiy to better channel it, and calm yourself down when you feel your temperature rising.

Well, i haven't heard of anyone having PMS for two - three weeks out of a month, that is just criminal! If you are experiencing extreme fluctuations during or before your period, perhaps there is an underlying problem with depression or anger?
The best way you can handle it is to be aware of when your period is due and be aware that a lot of what you are feeling is irrational and due to hormones. I know this seems hard at the time because everything seems so real, but if you are aware of what is happening, you will be able to step outside of yourself and talk yourself through it. Another thing you can do to reduce PMT symptoms is to exercise a bit. During PMT, your body realises a stress hormone called cortisol, so in effect, you are suffering stress pre-ceeding your period. One of the best ways you can handle this is to exercise. Treat it like the stress that it is. By exercising, you will burn up the corisol, thereby reducing it's effects on your nervous system and alleviating your moods a little bit. Also, try taking vitamin B executive stress formula before and during your period. |
