You need to think in terms of lifestyle change, not diet.

It's pretty basic - you need to burn more calories then you consume, and you need to think long term rather then short term. The most succesful people at keeping it off are those who made lifestyle changes they could live with, and lost about 1 pound a week. If you try and lose too much more (by drastically cutting calories for example) then that you start losing muscle, and setting your body into starvation which can cause you to mess up metabolism and regain weight. Crash diets too or fad diets also can mess with your body and cause you to have nutrient deficiencies or cause harm.

It takes a deficit of 3500 calories a week, or 500 a day, to lose one pound a week. Do this by adding at least 250 calories worth of cardio exercise a day - ie walking, running, cycling, swimming for 30-60 minutes, and eating 250 calories LESS (ie that would be one chocolate bar, one larger bagel). Eat healthier options - cut out refined sugars (or limit them), eat fruits, veggies, lean meats, whole grains. Drink lots of water. Keep a food log of EVERYTHING you eat and add calories until you get used to it...even those bites of a friends ice cream add up. Walk instead of drive, take stairs instead of elevator, and so on. Little changes add up.

Add some weight training too, muscle burns more calories then fat, so it weighs more, but is more efficent at burning calories.

Talk to a nutritionist/personal trainer to help develop a plan if you can.

What height are you? 100 lbs is likely too small depending on your height, and unhealthy for you and will have health implications.

Exercise as I said is only part of it, nutrition is also important. Most people also tend to "overestimate" the calories they burn exercising and "underestimate" the calories they eat..often by 40% or more.

RayKay said it well when she said, "lifestyle change."

If you want some tips, here are a few from me:

Don't eat fast food.

Don't eat anything fried, especially french fries.

Don't eat ranch dressing EVER on any salad. Use only basic oil and vinegar dressing.

Find a hobby that involves physical movement. (I like soccer, running, and bodyboarding). If you're having fun while you're burning calories, you won't even realize it and that's a good thing.

Eat more chicken, less beef, and even better - fish.

These are my general guidelines. There's no need to punish yourself and eat carrot sticks, unless you want to look orange. But in general, diet is most important followed by elevating your heart rate a little each day.

It really is simple, just that many people don't realize how simple these changes are to apply them to their lives.

Even if all you are doing is walking after eating every night. You are burning up some of the calories you have eaten which would have turned to fat.
