Squeamish
Heya,
It's me again. Okay ever since before I can remember, I have always been squeemish. It's getting worse now. Sometimes in science biology I have to watch these videos. Like about blood disorders, diabetes and body organs ect ... anyway I can't stand it! In the diabetes video it showed you this women who has to inject herself with insulin and the you got a close up of the needle going in to the skin. I propper felt faint Then I saw this one about blood disorders where sometimes your blood cells becoe sticky and can cause clots. I felt really sick! and I felt like I was going to faint because I had black spots appearing everywhere. Then I saw one about body organs in animals and humans and this scientist started cutting them up and I felt ill! I watch videos all the time and I can't stand it I feel sick. I try not to look but the narrator makes it worse. I haven't told me teacher because he might think I'm too weird!!! No-ones feels bothered by it! I can't even watch a frst aid video without fainting. Last yr I had to do a first aid exam and we watched this video and it showed you this gurl starting to choke on a gob stopper and I collapsed! Honest. I can't bare it! I don't know what to do. I feel sick when I have to wtach them. Can you get over been squeemish? Please please help! Miya

Certainly.
If it's something you really feel like doing. It doesn't just happen. You could start thinking about what feelings come up when you see these things. Not sick or dizzy - those are the results of feelings. But do you feel frightened, angry, sad? Do you imagine how all those disorders/procedures would feel if they were happening to you? Did you ever see or experience illness or an accident in your past? Ever had someone close to you get hurt - anything that involved a lot of blood/fluids? We are often triggered by things and don't make the connection because the memory can only hold so much. If this is true for you, making the connection and telling yourself you are safe during these moments should help. If none of these things happened to you, then I suggest taking deep breaths, SLOWLY and quietly - taking control of your body in the few ways you can, until you feel calm again. If you have to take these deep breaths for the entire period, thats ok. I'm sure you can do it without anyone noticing. |

I used to feel exactly the way you describe--I couldn't even go to my doctor's office and look at the posters on the wall, and I would nearly pass out when I cut my finger.
Well, when I was 16, I was hospitalized for severe pneumonia and complications, and I had a nurse accidentally spill my blood all over me & my bed (she messed up my IV and I was actually bleeding on myself, and to top it all--my boyfriend and friends were there visiting me!)... I just lay there and watched--to my surprise, it did not affect me at all. For some reason, since then I have had no problems whatsoever. I have no trouble dissecting lab rats & beagles, and often spend my nights watching the Discovery Health Channel (very graphic) with my fiance... |

Nothing troubling has happend to me like. I was in hospital too for an operation on my nose and heart to see why I couldn't breathe well, but I didn't feel sick in any way what so ever.
I know what you mean about going to doctors. The worst thing is when they take your blood pressure and you feel faint because of the circulation not getting through your system. Also I can't stand blood tests make me feel whoozy. Even the digrams in the books make me feel extremely ill. My legs feel like jelly, I get black sopts appearing and I feel sick. When I watch the videos I don't feel any emotion exept being grossed out. I'm alright with horror films. even gory ones. It's just reality things that bother me. I have tried breathing but it just seems to get me worked up inside. Is it something I can over come? Miya
