Lump

I have a lump on my buttock just to the side of the very top of my crack. At first i noticed it and thought it was just a bruise but it has increased in size and is very painful to sit on, on the surface it looks like a bruise. I am imbarressed about talking to my mum about it and i dont want to see a docter about it before i know what it is. Maybe you can help me out.

Thanks

Unfortunately no one but a doctor can give you a proper diagnosis so you are going to have to go and see one.

My best guess would be that it is some kind of boil. Sorry mate, you'll have to bite the bullet and see the doctor.

Okay, you very, very likely have what is known as a "pilonedal abscess". Not life threatening, nothing to be embarrassed about and very painful. These usually require surgical intervention though "lancing" of the abscess may relieve the problem for years.

Basically, these cysts consist of (and I'll go ahead and say "yuck" for you) pus and hair just below the surface of the skin. It may drain. It may not. It isn't caused by anything you did (or didn't do). They just happen so there is no reason to be embarrassed.

Tell your mother and see the doctor. It won't get better on it's own. It won't go away without medical attention. And be prepared, they usually return.

No, no, if that is what it is it should just be a local anaesthetic and about 10 minutes work.

I didn't mean to scare you and certainly hope I didn't. The "surgery" involved is minor out-patient surgery to remove the entire abscess in hopes of it not returning. Don't be scared. It's really very simple. The reason I know about this is because a friend I worked with had this problem. He had the so-called "surgery" and was back at his desk the next day feelings much, much better. But I am very glad you are going to tell your mother.

And, of course, I could be wrong. It could simply be a boil but based on the location, etc. it sounds right. Do an internet search on "pilonedal abscess" and read about it yourself if it will make you feel better.

I did a google search and the location is precise right next to my tailbone so im pretty sure its a plionedal abscess. You didnt really scare me but i was shocked that surgery was necessary.

Hope you feel better now. Did you tell your mother yet? This 53 year old grandmother would like to say one other thing...always tell your mother no matter what the problem. If you don't already know it you will learn that she is always concerned for your happiness and welfare.

Bye.

I agree it sounds like a pilonidal cyst. However thats a determination best made by your doctor. And the surgery for this isn't dangerous, its just messy. I have a friend who has gone through this and she's just fine. But it's important to get some medical attention so that the cyst doesn't grow too large.

As Cartecay said, make sure to inform your parents about what is going on. They need to know right away!
