For me being engaged means a serious promise, as serious as marriage itself, that I don't consider should be broken. Logistically often it is not possible to marry right after your engagement. I wouldn't want to get engaged before we have not worked out all the quirks that either one of us deems necessary in order to be ready for marriage. Thus I wouldn't put a certain timeframe on when that has to occur since it really depends on the 2 people involved and their individual history.

If a man were so freaked out that a woman asked him to marry her that he would bolt obviously doen't love her enough either.

If you seriously love someone that sort of thing pales into insignificance in comparison to the love you feel. Real love means people can get past those silly gender rules in order to spend your life with someone you love. I just see it is absurd to pass up a great opportunity because someone is too hidebound or fearful.

Or they could be working under the false assumption that if it isn't all immediately hearts and roses, they should break up, when the reality is all couples must work thru some problems and learn how to negotiate. The greater the level of commitment, the less likelihood of bailing if the going gets rough for any number of reasons.

I think the latter here is more likely.
