But what about the Holy Spirit, who stands at "the left hand of God"? What is his mysterious purpose? How can we see this force or know his relationship to God-and to our lives? In this brilliant and down-to-earth book, Calvin Miller offers an exhilarating experience in Christian thought. Loving God Up Close illuminates a mystery at the center of our lives as Christians and shows how we can let the enormous force of the Holy Spirit bring us closer to God-and love him more than we ever thought we could. In the Book of Acts, the Holy Spirit comes with the sound of rushing wind "like of a fire," giving the disciples the sudden ability to speak in languages they had never known. Today, many of us shy away from this seemingly fantastic side of religion and believe it simply is not for us. Calvin Miller looks at how often the Holy Spirit is mentioned throughout the Bible and how this aspect of the Trinity has influenced history and the works of many of the world's great thinkers. He presents dozens of real-life examples of a spirit-the word comes from the Latin for "breath"-infusing ordinary people with divine energy, hope, and extraordinary courage in the most desperate of times. And he demonstrates that a new awakening to the Holy Spirit is essential to rebuilding our communities and revitalizing our prayers. A practical book on a wondrous subject, Loving God Up Close gives us a map to explore a powerful, heavenly force within us all-and let it take us to a more intense, loving relationship with our creator.
