Valerie Davis Raskin, M.D.After graduating from Brown University, Valerie Davis Raskin, M.D., attended medical school at the University of Cincinnati intending to become an obstetrician-gynecologist. Instead, she specialized in psychiatry, focusing on the emotional aspects of women's reproductive and sexual health. As a longstanding critic of the mythological image of the perfect mother, Dr. Raskin has become a nationally recognized expert on women's mental health. She has explored the emotional impact of women's reproductive transitions in her books When Words Are Not Enough: The Women's Prescription for Depression and Anxiety and This Isn't What I Expected: Overcoming Postpartum Depression (with Karen Kleiman, M.S.W). Dr. Raskin has appeared on Oprah, Today, and National Public Radio, as well as in Newsweek, US News and World Report, and numerous national newspapers. In her latest book, Great Sex for Moms: Ten Steps to Nurturing Passion While Raising Kids Dr. Raskin provides encouragement and practical advice for maintaining a healthy and happy sex life after kids. Dr. Raskin is a mother of three, and lives in the Chicago area, where she teaches clinical psychiatry at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. |
